How can we brew a beer even better than the last?

It’s the question we ask ourselves every day. Sometimes at 3am, too.

In 2019, DJ and Harriet McCready embarked on opening Mountain Culture, the first brewpub in the heart of the Blue Mountains, with a plan to brew really good beer for locals and tourists to enjoy after adventuring in the area.

Like all good plans, this one went to sh*t pretty quickly…

KEY EVENTS ALONG THE WAY

2007

It was a homebrew competition between DJ and his flat mate, Josh, that kicked off DJ’s brewing career - his passion to beat Josh led him to volunteer at a local brewery to learn the craft from their head brewer.

2011

DJ wound up taking over from that head brewer, and then moving on to be the head of the experimental program at one of USA’s biggest breweries, Oskar Blues.

2014

Seeking a new challenge, DJ moved to Australia where he met Harriet. She was not the challenge. But this pic was on their third date when DJ won some beer awards and she realised he might actually be pretty good at brewing.

2016

While travelling and climbing mountains in Europe and visiting iconic German breweries such as Pilsner Urquell and Augustiner Brewery, DJ and Harriet start daydreaming about opening a brewery themselves...

Feb 2017

After months of tossing up where to set up their brewery, they settled on the Blue Mountains, NSW - a location that resonated with their outdoorsy, adventure lifestyle.

Dec 2018

DJ and Harriet get to work renovating an old Civic Video store into a fully operational brewery, whilst keeping costs down by living in what is now the mezzanine seating area.

Sep 2019

Our first 12 hec brewhouse was installed (which is still used in Katoomba today) and we brewed we our first batch of beer - American Pale Ale.

Oct 2019

Mountain Culture’s doors finally open to the public!

Dec 2019

The Black Summer fires of 2019/2020 saw the beautiful Blue Mountains catch alight in the worst bushfires in history. The locals evacuate. The tourists steer clear.

Jan 2020

With barely any customers, we decided to experiment and play around with some new beer styles and we brewed our first limited release beer, Cult Juice, which has gone on to become a core range NEIPA.

Apr 2020

COVID-19 forced us to close the doors of our brewpub. In one week, we changed production from keg to can, and launch a new website in order to start posting our beers all around Australia.

Jun 2020

We re-opened the brewpub and affectionately dubbed it ‘Factory Fusion’ where, on a Sunday night we would pack away all the tables and chairs, bring in all the raw materials and equipment, ready to brew Monday morning.

Jul 2020

Just two weeks later, DJ and Harriet welcomed their first child, Dorothy.

Oct 2020

We celebrated our first birthday with our team of 20 staff. We needed a party to reflect on what a whirlwind of a year it had been!

Nov 2020

Our beers officially became available at independent bars and bottle shops nationwide.

Nov 2020

We were voted Australia’s #1 Best New Brewery by Beer & Brewer.

Feb 2021

We picked up the keys to our new production facility in Emu Plains with the goal to increase our production capacity from 60,000L per year to 8 million litres per year.

Mar 2021

We brewed our first Wet Hop IPA using freshly harvested Galaxy hops.

Jun 2021

COVID-19 strikes again reinstating lockdown regulations and making online distribution more crucial than ever.

July 2021

We brewed our 100th beer which was an Imperial Raspberry Stout.

Sep 2021

Just two years after brewing our first beer in Katoomba, we completed our second expansion and brew our first beer on our new 25hl brewhouse in Emu Plains.

Mar 2022

We hosted our first ever beer festival inviting some of the best breweries in Australia to the Blue Mountains for the ultimate beer showcase.

Oct 2022

Our Emu Plains taproom opened to the public.

Dec 2022

Our new Krones canning line was commissioned increasing our canning speed from 50 cans per minute to 250 cans per minute.

Jan 2023

Our flagship beer Status Quo Pale Ale was voted the #1 beer in Australia in the GABS Hottest 100 People’s Choice Award in its debut year. We had a big party to celebrate!

Mar 2023

Our beloved Katoomba Brewpub was voted the #1 brewery venue in New South Wales.

Jul 2023

We completed our third expansion and brewed our first beer on our new state-of-the-art 50hl brewhouse custom designed and manufactured by GEA in Germany. We can now brew in a day what would have taken us a year to brew on our original Katoomba kit!

Oct 2023

We brewed a collaboration Pale Ale with DJ’s life-long brewing heroes, Sierra Nevada. They don’t do many collabs making the experience extra special.

Jan 2024

Status Quo Pale Ale was voted Australia’s #1 beer once again in the GABS Hottest 100 People’s Choice Award. We had another big party to celebrate!

Feb 2024

We launched our new core range lager, APL, which has become our second most popular beer behind Status Quo. Using Australian ingredients, this beer has seen the most R&D put into the recipe design of any beer of ours.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

DJ McCready - CEO + Co-Founder

Originally from North Carolina, DJ first hit the brewing scene in a very familiar setting - the living room. There, a competition between him and his flat mate as to who could brew the better homebrew got so heated, DJ started mopping the floors at a local brewery in order to have easy access to their head brewer who he could pester for tips and tricks.

Two years later, he wound up as their head brewer but, more importantly, took the title of best home brewer (only if you ask him, that is.) After honing his craft there and at renowned US craft brewery, Oskar Blues, he moved to Sydney as the founding head brewer of Modus Operandi in the Northern Beaches. It was during this time he met his wife and co-founder of Mountain Culture, Harriet.

Harriet McCready - Creative Director + Co-Founder

After years working in women’s magazines as the former deputy editor of Dolly and Cosmopolitan magazines, Harriet didn’t know much about the brewing industry. (“Much” is being kind; “anything” is more accurate.) But she did know DJ’s beer was the best beer she’d ever tasted and had a hunch that if he just spent his days brewing, she could go for long lunches.

Unfortunately for Harriet, it takes more than just really good beer to run a brewery and when the business had to pivot from pivot from hospitality venue to e-commerce and retail, she drew on her experience to build a brand through storytelling, creative direction and e-commerce.

Here’s where people always ask us, yeah, cool,
but what’s your secret sauce?

Honestly, we think it’s because we’ve always been a beer-led brewery. That might sound strange but when you look at how we operated as a business for the first few years, having the best beer was always our North Star.

Taking the beer seriously and not ourselves.

Mountain Culture is an extension of its founders (for better or worse) and resonates authentically with lovers of a good time, with a cold beer in hand.
